Peter Fill is an all-round skier. In the 2006/2007 season he was the first Italian athlete since Alberto Tomba in the leaders of the Ski World Cup.
At the age of 3 years old, he learned to ski with his first teacher Frieda Senoner. Fill obtained his first successes during his middle-school years, when he was coached by Peter Thomaseth.
In 1997/98 he came to the training-centre Schlerngebiet, where he had his uncle Arnold as coach. In the same year he joined Bolzano-Bozen's B-Pool (coached by Sepp Steinwandter). One year later he advanced to the A-Pool under Stephan Feichter.
In 1999 he had a great success, as he won every discipline at the National Junior Championships: he returned home with 4 Gold Medals and the Italian press called him "the phenomenon".[1]
In 2000, Fill joined the national team for the first time. His coach was Ernst Pfeifhofer, who was also his coach the following year in the Italian B-Team. At the same time he became a member of the Carabinieri sportsgroup.
In 2001 he achieved his first important success on an international level, a bronze medal in Super-G at the Juniores Alpine Ski World Championship.
In 2002/03 he was part of the A-Team of Flavio Roda for the first time. In February 2002, Fill won the World Juniors and, as a result, took place in his first Super-G race of Ski World Cup on 7 March 2002 at Altenmarkt in Austria, where he placed an impressive 12th preceding the Norwegian Lasse Kjus for only one hundredth. While Peter's strengths are the downhill and Super-G, he is also competitive in the technical disciplines. On 13 January 2006 he stood 3rd on the Ski World Cup podium for the Super-Combined in Wengen (Switzerland).
During the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, Peter achieved great results, being on the podium 7 times: 4 of them in downhill and 2 in Super-G, unfortunately without winning any of these competitions.
On 21 March 2007 he became for the third time Italian Champion in different disciplines (2 times in Super-G and one in Giant Slalom).
During the season 2007/2008 he was not able reaching the podium, even if he was six times in the World Cup Top 10. On 29 November 2008 in Lake Louise (Canada) he won his first World Cup competition, preceding the Swiss Carlo Janka and the Swedish Hans Olsson, becoming the seventh Italian in World Cup history winning downhill competition.
On 4 February 2009, he won the silver medal in Super-G during the World Championships in Val d'Isère (France) on the icy and steep slope Face del Bellevarde. He was able to place himself before the three-time World Champion Aksel Lund Svindal, but was not fast enough to beat the Swiss Didier Cuche. Peter's medal is the only one won by the Azzurri in male competitions. Because of his excellent result, big celebrations were organized in his hometown Castelrotto. Peter was picked up at home and brought by horse in the town's square, were he joined up with the major, his uncle Norbert Rier, leader of the folk group Kastelruther Spatzen, his family and fans.[2]
Son of Alois and Luzia, he has two sisters, Bettina and Sara. Peter's cousin is the famous Giant Slalom Champion Denise Karbon. After junior high school he started working as an auto body mechanic attending a professional school, which he left after becoming more and more involved in Alpine ski competitions. His mother tongue is German and he speaks both Italian and English very well. His idol in everyday life is his uncle Norbert Rier, leader of the Kastelruther Spatzen (well-known folk group, especially in German speaking countries) who dedicated the song "Wiedermal a super Zeit" to Fill for the silver medal achieved in FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Val d'Isère.[4] His favorite hobbies are soccer, golf, ice-hockey, mountain bike and fast luxurious sport sedans. His favorite movie is Matrix, while his cult book is Lance Armstrong autobiography It's not about the bike. He loves listening the German singer Xavier Naidoo. He supports the Juventus football team.
Since 2007 his manager has been Andreas Goller,[5] who in the past looked after Kristian Ghedina's business.[6]
His ski man is the well-known South-Tyrolean Sepp Kuppelwieser (who was Kjetil André Aamodt's ski man for ten years, the skier who won the most medals in alpine ski history). His favorite slope is the Lauberhorn in Wengen (Switzerland). His sports idol is Lasse Kjus.
In the season 2008/09 Atomic, Briko, Finstral and Leki, as official sponsor and suppliers, decided to reward Fill for his excellent results achieved during the season, offering him the chance to win the Artega GT sport car if he were to capture the downhill during the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup finals in Are on March 11, 2009.[7]
